MEEKER ELECTED PRESIDENT AT IOWA OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION’S CONFERENCE

Elections were held during the 123rd Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association’s (IOMA) Annual Conference, which was recently held in Des Moines. Dr. Brian Meeker of Vinton was elected President of the Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association. Dr. Meeker obtained his Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree in 1984 from University of Osteopathic Medicine & Health Sciences (Des Moines University), in Des Moines, Iowa.

LifeServe Blood Center is on-call to send blood products to Texas

LifeServe Blood Center is prepared to support areas in emergency situations as part of the Blood Emergency Readiness Corps (BERC). BERC, is composed of more than 35 blood centers from across the nation that have committed to collecting extra blood units on a rotating, on-call schedule. The extra blood products are held in reserve for critical-need scenarios, like the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

Vinton Red Cross Blood Drive Thursday, May 26

The Vinton Red Cross Blood Drive will be held on Thursday, May 26, at the Vinton Skate and Activities Center, 1703 C Ave., from 1:00-6:00 p.m. Appointments can be made by going online at redcrossblood.org, or by calling Kristie at (319) 472-4292. Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins will be accepted. All donors will receive an aluminum water bottle.

Benton County Public Health Sexual Health Screening Clinic Monday, June 27

enton County Public Health, in partnership with Linn County Public Health, will begin providing free and confidential screening for HIV, hepatitis C, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia.The first clinic will be held on Monday, June 27th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm and will continue on a quarterly schedule. No identification or insurance is needed to take part in this service.

Formula Shortage Update from the Departments of Public Health and Human Services

In Iowa and nationwide, infant formula is in short supply. The Iowa Departments of Public Health and Human Services are working to provide information and resources to Iowans who are impacted by the shortage.Supply chain constraints have been affecting product availability since January. The formula recall issued in February and closure of the Abbott production facility in Michigan has exacerbated this issue.
